No matter the gametype, there's one location in Rat Race that'll help your team immensely, but it'll cost you your personal score...
You see, newbies often don't realize that only one person has to be in the "hill" at a time to accumulate time. Hence, it's not uncommon to be playing KOTH and come across a whole team squatting mere feet apart out in the open because they're all trying to get time in the hill. Of course, the truth ends up being that a single shot costs not only all of them their lives, but gives the opposing team the next 20 seconds or so while they all scramble to get back to that location (not smart).
Due to this, I often spend ALL my time covering such ones that are on MY team and blithely run to the hill each time they spawn.
Instead of offering up yourself as roadkill, sacrifice instead your personal time in the hill. As soon as your first teammate is in the hill, take up a position to cover him. Rat race is a prime example, since it's so enclosed, and since there are so many nice positions from which to cover your teammates while they get time. The better job you do keeping your guys on the hill alive, the easier it will be for your team to win.
Personally, here is my all-time favorite spot from which to cover my team on rat race:
Don't just sit here, either. Repeatedly nade (or shoot) the tunnel to the right (remember, just hitting the roof will kill anyone in the tunnel), and only shoot the porter edges if someone comes through it.
As for the rest of the hill locations, the same rules apply. Try covering or repeatedly nading the entrances leading to your team and the hill. Most enemies won't expect to engage you until they get close, so nading faraway corners is very effective.
Of course, this'll cost you in time (I routinely have the lowest time accumulated), but your team will always benefit from your efforts.
Note: this doesn't mean to focus on kills. It means nothing if you have a 10:1 ratio but your team loses anyways. Don't just run around killing, PROTECT those gaining time. If they die, either jump in and gain time or cover the hill until they can make it back.
(edit: Griffin and I focused on this together today, him bashing repeatedly at the porter while I kept the tunnel clear. We easily got to 5:00 with the other team completely frustrated in their attempts to get up top. I believe their cumulative total for the game was like :15. Once they catch on the guy in my posiiton must relocate down to the other tunnel, firing back at the tunnel for a time, then switch back.)
